A Montserrado County District #15 Candidate, Telia Urey of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), has announced that she has halted all of her campaign activities in the district, saying that she and her supporters will no longer campaign to avoid any further violence in the district.
The statement by the opposition candidate is an apparent lamentation of the waves of violence she said has been perpetrated against her by those she referred to as supporters of her main contender, Candidate Abu Kamara of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change.
Ms. Urey made the disclosure during the last press conference of the Collaborating Political Parties on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the Headquarters of the Opposition Liberty Party, a member party of the CPP, in Congo Town, Monrovia.
The Chairman of Team-Urey on Mobilization and Campaigning, Mr. Alex Nma and some supporters told The ANALYST in the District Monday, that they were instructed by Telia not to campaign. He also said the measure by the candidate is intended to avoid attacks on them by Abu Kamara’s supporters.
Mr. Nma said since National Elections Commission declared the re-run of some precincts in the district, Team-Urey is yet to campaign as a result of the violence by the supporters of Candidate Kamara. “They are all about in the district hunting any one wearing Telia Urey’s T-shirt to attack,” he said.
Nma indicated that the situation has generated fear in the people of the district, especially the massive supporters of Telia Urey who would like to wear the T-shirts in solidarity and support.
Our reporter from the district observed that supporters of the Telia camp were very sad, with some hiding themselves indoors while the supporters of Mr. Abu Bana Kamara of the CDC were seen everywhere in the streets of Logan Town campaigning around the district, singing as the wear their Abu Kamara T-shirts.
Recently after the latest District #15 violence, the Liberian National Police issued a statement saying promising the people that the violent actors in Saturday incidence e will be made to face the full weight of the law;”
“The Liberia National Police condemns in the strongest term violence which broke out today, August 17, 2019 in District #15 between supporters believed to be of the Coalition for Democratic Change candidate, Abu Kamara and supporters believed to be of the Opposition Collaborating Political Parties candidate, Telia Urey.
The police press statement said the LNP views such action as counterproductive to the peace and stability of the state, and added that the LNP’s first contingent of Police that firstly responded to the scene was unable to arrest violent actors. When reinforcements arrived, the alleged perpetrators had absconded, the statement said.
“Members of the public, especially residents of District #15 are urged to assist with any useful information including videos and pictorials to ensure that those responsible are made to face the full weight of the law.”
The police statement followed violent clashes that erupted between supporters of the Collaborating Political Parties’ Telia Urey and those of Abu Kamara of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) in the wake of an announcement of the rerun of the Montserrado County District #15 by Elections. The clashes left Telia’s vehicle damaged and several other people wounded.
