US Downplays “One-China” Policy -As Pelosi Touches Down in Taiwan in Defiance of China

MONROVIA – US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi touched down in Taiwan Tuesday evening in a daring move that some analysts believe could further escalate tension between China and the US, due to what the Chinese believe is the US Government’s blatant disregard for United National General Assembly 2758 that speaks to the One-China Policy, quashing any recognition of Taiwan being a separate state outside of China’s territorial domain.

Before Pelosi’s visit to Taipei, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian had clearly stated that the Chinese side has repeatedly made clear to the US side its serious concern over Speaker Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan and its firm opposition to the visit.

“We are fully prepared for any eventuality. If the US side insists on making the visit, the Chinese side will take firm and strong measures to safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US must assume full responsibility for any serious consequence arising thereof,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lijian had indicated.

Apart from the foreign ministry spokesperson, China’s Ministry of National Defense and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council also made statements on the issue. The Defense Ministry Spokesperson said that if the US side insists on making the visit, the Chinese military will never sit idly by, and will certainly take strong and resolute measures to thwart any interference by external forces and secessionist attempts for ‘Taiwan independence’, noting, “We Chinese mean what we say.”

On July 28, in his phone call with President Biden, President Xi Jinping emphasized China’s principled position on the Taiwan question. China’s opposition to official exchanges between the US and Taiwan is clear and consistent.

Recently, China has made its position and attitude clear on multiple occasions. As President Xi stressed, “the three Sino-US joint communiqués embody the political commitments made by the two sides, and the one-China principle is the political foundation for China-US relations. China firmly opposes separatist moves toward “Taiwan independence” and interference by external forces, and never allows any room for ‘Taiwan independence’ forces in whatever form. The position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan question is consistent, and resolutely safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the firm will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. The public opinion cannot be defied. Those who play with fire will perish by it. It is hoped that the US will be clear-eyed about this. The US should honor the one-China principle and implement the three joint communiqués both in word and in deed.”

“There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The one-China principle is a fundamental principle affirmed in UNGA Resolution 2758. It is the premise on which the PRC established diplomatic relations with 181 countries. It is an established international consensus and a widely recognized basic norm in international relations. However, certain individuals are openly breaking commitments and keep challenging China’s red line on the Taiwan question. This is an act of trampling on historical facts and justice, challenging the postwar international order and undermining international rule of law.

“The one-China principle is what underpins peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. When the one-China principle is fully recognized and earnestly followed, the Taiwan Strait would remain calm and tranquil. Otherwise, there would be dark clouds or even violent storms across the Taiwan Strait.

“We want to once again make it clear to the US side that the Chinese side is fully prepared for any eventuality and that the People’s Liberation Army of China will never sit idly by, and we will make resolute response and take strong countermeasures to uphold China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, What the US should do is to abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, fulfill President Biden’s commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence” and not arrange for a visit by Speaker Pelosi to Taiwan,” the Chinese Defense spokesman warned.
