MONROVIA –  As the presidential and legislative elections draw closer, the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 convened a special national convention under the theme: “Rebranding the Liberation Agenda for National Renewal”, which saw party electing Mr. Tapple Doe as Political leader, while Mr. Bernard Benson alias DJ Blue was elected as National Chairman.

The convention was held at the national headquarters of the party in Congo Town where delegates from across the 15 political divisions of Liberia elected the two officials for which they were later inducted into office. Prior to that, the party reviewed, concluded and adopted the constitution in the presence of observers.

In his special statement, Political Leader Tapple Doe paid homage to the late Daniel E. Cassell, who was the vision bearer and standard bearer of PLP before his demise in December last year. Mr. Doe also expressed gratitude to the delegates for his election, as well as the election committee for conducting a peaceful, free and transparent process.

He branded the PLP as a party of the people with a great platform which he said emanated from the hard work of Dr. Cassell, assuring the partisans that the dream and aspiration of Dr. Cassell to liberate Liberia will continue.

In his subsequent statement, Doe revealed that the PLP will not field a presidential candidate in the upcoming October 10 polls because of its standard bearer Dr. Cassell, who died in December 2022 in the United States of America. However, he said the party is open to collaboration and is having serious discussions with other political parties which will be made known to the public in the not-too-distant future.

Mr. Doe, who previously served as national chairman and organizing chairperson of the party, in a brief interview after the convention, refuted speculations that the party momentum has died following the death of Dr. Cassell, saying: “We are a force to reckon with and we still have the numbers to carry us to elections this year. The PLP is going forward with a renewed strength”, he emphasized further.

Also making a special statement, National Chairman Bernard Benson said the PLP will lead a new era of political leadership in Liberia, stressing that the party will not be a dormant institution. He encouraged the partisans to unify and stand together as well as to join what he called the movement of liberation.

Mr. Benson who previously served as National Chair for Mobilization, vowed that the new leadership will make the party attractive as the nation goes to elections in few months, adding that the PLP is the only political party with offices and headquarters across the country where more women and youth occupy positions in the national structure of the party.

He enjoined his political leader as he reiterated that the PLP is open to collaboration. He praised the late Dr. Daniel E. Cassell for well structuring the party by setting up administrative headquarters in every county, stressing that the party is having discussions with other political institutions; and after that, the party will make a better decision for the forward march of the PLP and the people of Liberia.
