Vice President Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor said no matter what difficulties the country is experiencing, Liberians must celebrate the New Year for their lives and a successful crossover from 2018 to 2019. “No matter the difficulties in our economy, we must celebrate the New Year because of our lives and believed that this will not last forever” VP Taylor told communities dwellers.
VP Taylor made the encouraging statement on January 1, 2019 (New Year Day), when she visited Gurley Street South Beach and Coconut Plantation Communities at which she made a presentation of about 51 bags of 25kg rice and 3 bundles of blankets to a group of physically challenged people including other young people living in both communities as well. During her presentation she informed recipients of the groups that the visit was intended to identify with those living with disability and other community youths on the day of festivity.
VP Howard-Taylor said the appalling condition of the physically challenged persons living out of the Group of 77 Headquarters is a major concern to her and the Executive Director of the Group of 77, Madam Florence Wayfa Ciapha.
She said such situation is the result of the incapacity of the Group of 77 facilities to host all of those living with disability in Monrovia but added that plans are underway to develop a suitable place for the physically challenged persons located in Bentol City.
“We have been working with your executive director to ensure that we provide a suitable place that will accommodate if not every one of you, but at least a good number of persons” she added.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Coconut Plantation Community, Edwards Oghogho lauded the Vice President for the good gesture toward the disabled group and other youths of the communities.
He also used the occasion to appeal to Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor to continue her support to the physically challenged people of Liberia by initiating capacity building programs that will enable them to survive in the absence of charity support from government and other philanthropic organizations.
Mr. Oghogho informed Vice President Taylor that the welfare of the physically challenged groups in Liberia especially those of his community is a paramount concern to him and therefore recommended that government should give them adequate attention.
“Madam Vice President we the leaders of the communities you have identified are begging for your goodwill to open a skill training program for our disable brothers and sisters so that they can be empowered” Chairman Oghogho asserted.
He at the same time pledged his full support to the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) Pro Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD).
Meanwhile, Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor has urged young people who are addicted to harmful substances like drugs to desist, noting that such habit can damage the future of a young person who could be Liberia’s next generational leader.
She said harmful drugs have contributed the highest number of disorder to those young Liberians that are mostly looked down upon due to their condition, indicating that young people who have gone wayward because of drugs addiction can be better persons in the society if they desist from the practice of drugs addiction.
