The realization that no single political party can ever win national elections in Liberia is fast resonating with political actors and others who have keen interest in mounting a quest for leadership in the country. The space for leadership is narrow but the field is crowded with so many political institutions vying for supremacy. In the midst of this, some others are forging alliances based on mutual commonality of thoughts, ideas and convenience. One such instance of different institutions coming together to forge a common front occurred recently under the umbrella of the Rainbow Alliance. What informed their decision, what are their chances in the arena already being dominated by two main political blocs and what they want to offer differently that others have not done? The Analyst Reports.
With the public dissemination of their framework document for collaboration, seven opposition political parties in the country have ended months of speculation and rumor in the political cycle on the possibility of forming a single formidable institution that will pose a challenge to the ruling establishment and carve for itself a place moving towards 2023 and beyond.
According to the framework document which include the constitution, bye-laws and code of conduct, copies of which are in possession of The Analyst, the parties concerned have formalized and finalized the decision to collaborate and work as a single party under the name RAINBOW ALLIANCE. The parties are the Union of Liberian Democrats, Vision for Liberia Transformation, Democratic Justice Party, Redemption Democratic Congress, True Whig Party, Movement for Economic Empowerment and Victory for Change Party.
For now the party is under a steering committee headed by Cllr. Emmanuel Tulay.
The leadership structure of the party is composed of 28 members on the executive committee under a national chairman and will hold office for 3 years. It also affirms gender sensitive and encourages female representation of not less than 7 persons, The document also spells out the setting up of a national administrative structure for the purpose of effective governance and accountability and shall comprise the National Convention which shall be the highest decision body of the party , Elected National Officers and the Council of Elders.
The formation of the Rainbow Alliance brings to three the number of collaborative parties operating under one. The first is the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) which consists of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), The National Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Liberia People’s Democratic Party (LPDP) while the second, the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) is made up of the former ruling Unity Party (UP), the Liberty Party (LP), the Alternative National Congress (ANC) and the All Liberia Party (ALP).
