Police Updates Public On Sexual & Gender-Related Cases

The Liberian National Police (LNP) has been updating the public on ongoing Police Investigations which are geared towards informing members of the general public on current status of some sexual and gender-related cases. The police updates covered cases of the late Yatta Evon Kamara, death of late Odell Sherman, the Alleged Rape at Christian Association of the Blind (CAB), Update on New Georgia Estate Child Abuse Case, and Update on Aggravated Assault Case in Zone 8 Base.

Concerning the update on the late Yatta Evon Kamara Investigation, the LNP gave a case Summary highlighting that police investigators were called in on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at the Palm Spring Hotel and informed of a female, Yatta Evon Kamara, 31 years old, lying unconscious with foam oozing from her mouth and bleeding from her nose. The Forensic team of the LNP carried out their physical examination and later took her the JFK hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The LNP indicated the case status by saying that Suspect Bob Ego Oby, 28 years old, a Nigerian national was immediately arrested and taken to the LNP headquarters and is currently undergoing investigation. The police update pointed out the current status, saying that the LNP is at the verge of conducting an autopsy on the body of the deceased victim in establishing the cause of death which will inform our investigation.

The Liberia national Police cautioned the public to remain calm as the LNP is doing everything to get to a logical conclusion of this investigation.

The update also covered the case of the late Odell Sherman’s death Investigation. The LNP update explained that on May 20, 2019, LNP investigators received information about a 21 year old female, Odell Sherman, a member of the 12th-A Class of the Harriet P. Bailey High School in Duarzon, Margibi County who was said to have been taken to the ELWA Hospital by Rev. Emmanuel Giddings, owner of the compound where the late victim was seeing lying with blood oozing from her left ear.

According to accounts of some persons of interests, the deceased victim joined her classmates in celebrating the completion of their West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Monday, May 20, 2019 when she along with her friends, having contributed 5 USD, made their way to the Atlantic Entertainment Center in Duarzon, Margibi County.

Police preliminary investigative findings revealed that all of the girls camped at Rev. Giddings house, except for Odell. After they stayed at the entertainment center for a while, Odell parted company with her friends and ended up at Rev. Giddings compound. She was later discovered in the compound lying unconscious with blood oozing from her left ear.

Police said Rev. Giddings, having heard from his son Abraham Sumo that a girl later identified as Odell Sherman was lying unconscious, drove her to the ELWA hospital where she was pronounced dead by doctors on call.

On the status of the case, the LNP in collaboration with Odell’s family represented by her stepfather, Alphonso Sherman and his biological father Bob Gray took the body to the St. Moses Funeral Home for preservation pending the conduct of an autopsy to establish the cause of death.

According to a medical report from the ELWA Hospital, the deceased victim may have either died as the result of falling or sexual assault, something which makes it important for the conduct of an autopsy to establish the actual cause of death. However, a virginal swap, the LNP said, was taken to be tested.

Family members said they were told that Odell was actually tempered with sexually, although it has not been authenticated because there is no medical report to that effect.  The LNP said it is working with the family to ensure the speedy conduct of an autopsy which outcome will satisfy the family and members of the general public.

Besides, the LNP gave an update on the alleged gang rape at Cuttington University, explaining that on May 30, 2019, Police in Gbarnga, Bong County arrested two students of the Cuttington University, Marc Holder -33 years old, and Stephen Collins-29 years old, on allegations of gang rape.

Stephen Collins, a prospective graduate of the Cuttington University, upon completion of his thesis defense decided to have a celebration drink. He along with his friend, Marc Holder invited the victim to a local entertainment center. According to the victim, she was drugged with a bottle of stout she was offered and could only imagine seeing herself naked the next morning making the victim to take her complaint to Sergeant Kollie Town Police depot the next day.

Police said the victim has received medical attention at the C.B. Dumbar Hospital in Gbarnga while the suspects have been duly charged with gang rape and have been forwarded to court. They are currently in pre-trial detention awaiting court trial.

Concerning the update covering the alleged rape at Christian Association of the Blind (CAB), the police explained in their update that in 2018, the Women and Children Protection Section of the Liberia National Police was informed of an alleged sexual assault case involving a juvenile, Johnny Karyea, 16 years of age for impregnating a victim (name withheld) who was attending the Christian Association of the Blind (CAB) and forwarded to court for adjudication.

Police reports also indicated that Kwame Wreh, a man who was accused of also sexually assaulting the victim prior to her encounter with Johnny Karyea, is being sought after by LNP investigators to face prosecution. “Police investigators are doing everything humanly possible to ensure that suspect Wreh is arrested and made to face the full weight of the law,” the update said.

Also in the New Georgia Estate Child Abuse Case, the update said on Sunday, June 16, 2019, an alleged case of aggregated Assault was reported to the Women and Children Protection Section at the Zone 4 Depot 3 sub-Police Station by Mr. Ernest Mendean, the Chairperson of the New Georgia Gulf Community.
