MOT Begins Vehicle Inspection Today -As Institution Urges Straight Compliance

MONROVIA: The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Transport will today, Wednesday, April 17, 20224 commence the inspection and registration compliance enforcement exercise across the country according to the Minister of Transport, Sirleaf Tyler who said the process will be  simultaneous throughout the 15 counties and will include inspection at concessions sites, inspections of vehicles, Tricycles, and motor bikes among others.

Speaking Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the Ministry of Information Culture Affairs and Tourism regular press briefing, Transport Minister Tyler said the inspection exercise will last 21 days.

The minister said the inspection will be jointly conducted to include the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) and the Liberia National Police (LNP) respectively. “During the vehicle registration compliance and enforcement exercise, the Liberia National Police and the Liberia Revenue Authority will search for valid vehicle registration documents, motor insurance certificates, or stickers as well as vehicle road worthiness.  The team will also inspect vehicles with government plates without GSA emblem on them”, he said.

Minister Tyler therefore advised all operators and owners of cars, kekeh (tricycles), and motorcycles operating in Monrovia and across the country “to proceed at the Ministry or any of its service centers across the country to access our services”.

The Ministry of Transports has service  centers at  locations including, KaKata, Margibi County, Ganta, Nimba County, Buchana, Grand Bassa County, Gbarnga, Bong Country and Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. Another location of its service centers is the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Monrovia

The plan of the Ministry, Minister Tyler disclosed, is to change the design of all the plates of the judiciary and the Legislature because plates that were used by the 53rd and 54th Le3gislature are still around and in use, stating that the Ministry is trying to get them out of the streets.

“This time around,  the plate will actually bear the name 55th Legislature, and because of what happened in the past, we going to follow same every time there is a change of the Legislature”, Minister Tyler said.

Minister Tyler noted that there are guest plates around that will also be changed and redesigned, adding that guest plates should be issued by two organizations, the GSA and the Foreign Ministry.

Meanwhile, the Transport Minister said he and his team inherited an institution that was engulfed with systematic malfunction, mismanagement of human resource management system, coupled with insufficient logistics, unaccountability of the Ministry assets registry, and constant interruption of power supply, the unavailability of internet at times, and the unavailability of conducive environment amongst others.

Besides, the minister disclosed that the two major fire disasters that occur at the Ministry the last six years affected the Ministry of Transport to some extent.

“Adequately, we saw quick interventions that where necessary; we had developed the Ministry 100 days deliverables plan. The quick impact interventions are meant to provide the needed remedies to challenges that would pose some impediments to the execution of the institution’s statutory mandate and core functions to address it all medium and long-term development goal,” he said.

He added that, ‘the overall goal of the 100 day deliverables is to improve and modernize an inefficient organization capacity, human resource capacity, and operational management system of the ministry, pointing out that one of the deliverables we had was to review all contracts, especially the one that was signed from 2018 to 2023.

“We have commenced the renovation of the Transport Ministry that was gutted by fire. We have completed that assets verification”, Minister Tyler indicated as he noted that from January 2 to the end of March, the ministry of transport has raised over $2.4m dollars to the national coffer just the first quarter constituted about 34% growth, and the main driver of the growth is the insurance.
