MONROVIA – All is set for the hosting of a national media reform conference in the banquet hall of Corina Hotel in Monrovia on Friday, January 7, 2020.
This is an initiative of the Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding in collaboration with the Press Union of Liberia with support from the British Embassy in Monrovia.
According to CEMESP Executive Director Malcolm Joseph, the media law reform is built to attract significant inputs that will lead to the formulation of a bill seeking to establish an Independent National Media Commission- “we expect an open and forthright conversations from the fifty stakeholders invited to weigh in on the pros and cons of an ideal regulatory model that fits the Liberian context.”
River Gee County Senator Conmany Wesseh will deliver the keynote, while the United Kingdom Ambassador to Liberia David Belgrove, Information Minister Eugene Nagbe and Press Union of Liberia President, Charles B. Coffey, Jr. are among dignitaries scheduled to make special remarks at the conference.
It has been observed that Liberia has a frenzied media environment, where rights are not matched by responsibility, a situation that calls for ethical underpinning based on a binding legislative instrument that fills the gap in existing frameworks such as the National Media Council initiated by the PUL.
CEMESP and PUL will guide the conference conversation and take note of salient points that will be incorporated in pending reform process using the multistakeholders approach.
The media law reform conference marks the final activity under the British Government funded project implemented by CEMESP. It is hoped that this conference will come out with strategies in setting the stage for multi stakeholders legislative process for the Establishment of an Independent National Media Commission for Liberia.
Moreover, road maps/strategic directions drawn up by the conference will inform the drafting, review and validation of a bill seeking the establishment of the Independent National Media Commission at consequent forums scheduled to be organized by the Press Union of Liberia.
