McGill Intensifies CDC Campaign -Takes Oversight for Margibi, Bong, Triggering Fears In Opposition Camp

MONROVIA: Former Minister for State for Presidential Affairs, who is also Senator-elect of Margibi County, has been drawn closely to the campaign activities of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

The joining of the CDC Campaign Team by Mr. McGill on the portal of the runoff polls is expected to boost the party’s machinery since he is one of the politically experienced persons in the ranks and files of the ruling party.

It was McGill who presided over the Party in 2017 when it launched an effective campaign against then incumbent ruling Unity Party and won overwhelmingly.

Some pundits are of the opinion that with the final phase of the 2023 general elections in full swing, the chances of President George Manneh Weah clinching victory is high was the entire campaign is now emboldened by the addition of Nathaniel Farlo McGill to the national campaign team.

According to a highly placed source within the ruling party, Mr. McGill for the first time joined the 2023 national campaign team of the CDC few days ago in strategic post-election assessment and lessons learned meeting.

The meeting was intended to review the participation of the party in the just concluded general elections, the challenges and the prospect of the party going into the run-off.

A source said the conveners of the meeting unanimously agreed to incorporate a number of experienced persons as the run off is just few days away, stating that “nothing less than a victory is expected from the leadership of our great party.”

The source further said the party did not officially announce to the public McGill’s return to active party activities because he is not new to the political institution, as he led the CDC from a robust opposition to take over state power in 2017 after wrestling power from the former ruling Unity Party(UP).

He however told The Analyst that McGill has being placed in an oversight role for Margibi and Bong counties with the task of leading the counties to deliver massive votes for President during the run off.

“Yes, I can confirm to you that our former winning Chairman, Honorable Nathaniel Farlo McGill, is back from sabbatical and as usual, he is leading the charge in Margibi where he won the senatorial race and Bong where he has a very strong base there,” the source said, asking not to be named in print.

“We are satisfied with what he has started to do especially in Margibi where ordinarily we should not have lost per the records from the National Elections Commission(NEC),” the source continued. “There are some things that occurred down the line but thank God we have put in place a mechanism to get us back on track and we are excited that McGill is back. We are going to win the runoff.”

A senior member in the opposition camp told The Analyst last night that they were equally informed that McGill who also served as Minister of State for Presidential Affairs under this dispensation was back in active service for the CDC and admitted that it will be a bad news for the opposition as McGill has vast experience in politics being a man who has friends as decision-makers in the various opposition parties.

“We were told last night but let me be bold and objective to admit that CDC has done herself good by bringing their former Chairman who took them to state power.

“Though it is something that should not really concern us, but knowing what his return to the party’s activities during these elections will mean for us as opposition, we must of course discuss about it,” he said, adding: “In the coming days we are going to rejig our strategies taking into account what I will refer to as the ‘McGill factor’. I will not deliberate further.”

The senator elect of Margibi is one of the very few top CDC officials who is feared most when it comes to strategies and the ability to use his immense contacts within political parties to his advantage.

Already news coming out from Margibi and Bong Counties have it that McGill has been able to restore sanity within the party and that he re-energized the members of the party as they go about making the case for the party for the run off race.

As the turn of events appear like, the CDC is expected to reclaim Margibi from the Unity Party and then improve the results from Bong County with the view of getting a better number of people voting for CDC in the run off.
