There are all reasons for all political parties in the country to take stock and reposition themselves. This year’s midterm senatorial elections are crucial for all towards general and presidential elections in 2023. For the opposition Liberty Party there is another important reason for critical re-consolidation. They lost the party’s founder, standard-bearer and political leader, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, whose charisma and persona did not only dominate the Liberty Party since its founding but also constituted the near-singular direction of the party. Coming to terms with the post-Brumskine regime and grappling with challenges of filling the void is something to behold. Nevertheless, under the circumstances the party went ahead and successfully conducted its first post-Brumskine retreat in preparation for a major political contestation. And, understandably, there were critical proposals in the burner, as The Analyst reports.
Opposition Liberty Party has reached what it calls key decisions at the retreat, including a mandate for its National Executive Council to within forty-five days finalize plans on Liberty Party’s involvement with the CPP, to the Party’s Constitution and to select candidates for the upcoming Mid-term Senatorial Elections.
The Liberty Party National Executive Council comprises of its Chairpersons and Secretary Generals of the fifteen counties, the National Executive Committee and the Advisory Council. It is the party’s highest decision-making body in the absence of a National Convention, and the only body that authorizes mergers and or collaboration with other parties.
The Party reportedly met in the port city of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County in a retreat that comes for the first time since the demise of its Political Leader Emeritus and Standard-Bearer-Emeritus, Cllr Charles Walker Brumskine.
LP is a major player in the contemporary opposition bloc that includes former ruling party, the Unity Party, the Alternative National Congress, the All Liberian Party, amongst others.
According to a release issued shortly after the Buchan Retreat, the Party noted that there have been long standing issues or differences arising from the 2017 Presidential Elections among leaders of the party which hampered smooth working relationships and impeded progress.
The Party declared that those issues were resolved at the retreat.
The release indicates that “in a scene of jubilation and enthusiasm, participants at the retreat reaffirmed their unflinching support and confidence in the leadership of Senators Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and Steve zargo as Political Leader and Chairman of the party and promised to work with them in protecting the legacy of Charles Walker Brumskine and moving the party forward”.
In her closing remarks, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence thanked delegates and all supporters of the party and urged them to remain ever-motivated by the fact that Liberty Party is well positioned to answer Liberia’s historical cry for leadership.
Supporters of the Liberty Party now look forward to the upcoming Executive Council Sitting to implement seal major decisions reached at the retreat.
The Special Leadership Retreat was organized by the Political Leader of the Liberty Party, Senator Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, bringing together the National Executive Committee, the Advisory Council, the Legislative Caucus, Former Legislative Candidates and other prominent stakeholders of the Liberty Party.
The Leadership Retreat which came in the aftermath of the death of the party’s founding father and former Standard-Bearer, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, was geared towards re-energizing partisans, reconciliation rebranding and recalibrating the party’s structures and activities ahead of the 2020 Mid-Term Senatorial Elections.
Mr. Musan Hassan Bility and Debah Allen, two former Presidential Campaign Managers of the Liberty Party and current leaders of the party’s Advisory Council moderated proceedings at the Retreat.
