Gender Minister Attends 74th UN General Assembly -Also Participating in 4th U.S.-Liberia Dialogue

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Williametta Saydee-Tarr is attending the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA. According to the United Nations, the General Assembly is an annual convergence of UN Member States in New York to discuss and work together on a wide array of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations, such as development, peace and security, international law etc.

Detached from the UNGA, on Monday, September 16, 2019, Liberia’s Ambassador to the United States of America Amb. George S. W. Patten coordinated the U.S.-Liberia Partnership Dialogue delegation that brought together Nine Ministers, Two Heads of SOEs (National Port Authority and National Oil Company of Liberia) Deputy and Assistant Ministers and other staff along with the Embassy staff.

The 4th session of the U.S.-Liberia Partnership Dialogue was geared towards institutionalizing relations, diplomacy and economic ties between the two countries.

Gender Minister Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr Co-moderated Roundtable #4 of the U.S. Liberia Partnership Dialogue and held discussions on Formulation for Growth: Health and Education System Strengthening. Minister Saydee-Tarr also attended Roundtable #s 1,2 & 3 which addressed the issues of Youth Engagement, Trafficking In Person and Imperative Economic Growth respectively.

Gender Ministry being a member of the Anti-Trafficking Taskforce, was represented by its Minister as a discussant alongside the Liberia’s Ministers of Labour and Justice who served as Chairman an Co-Chair respectively.

Collectively, they made commitments to ensure that the law is amended and work toward streamlining the process by which children from the counties are given to family or caretakers to bring to urban areas.

As traditionally observed, the UNGA has multiplies of Side Events where Member States dialogue on topics of importance to Nations interest. Given such historicity, on Sunday, September 22, 2019, Gender Boss will participate in a High-Level Event: “Solutions for Implementing  Gender-Responsive Climate Action” organized by  the governments of Costa Rica, Spain and Peru, with the support of UN Women and the UNSG Team.

The Gender boss will continue her engagement on Monday, September 23, as a Co-host on the High-Level Panel Event on Changing the forecast for girls: Targeted responses to climate change that builds the resilience of girls, which is organized by the Republic of Liberia, Finland and UNICEF.

On Tuesday, September 24, Min. Saydee-Tarr will participate in a High-Level Meeting: “Renewing Commitment towards Enhancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa,” organized by the Organization of African First Ladies.

Minister Tarr will also attend the Ninth Annual Official First Ladies Luncheon where she will pay tribute to designer Azzedine Alais Foundation.

Wednesday, September 25, the Gender Boss will participate in the following: Annual women peace and leadership symposium, a high-level forum on advancing women’s role and rights;  Minister High-level Commemorative event of the General Assembly on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child;  a Goal Within Reach: Ending the institutionalization of children to ensure no one is left behind organized by the European Union to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations;

Champions for Generation Equality – Women Leaders of the World” and the Council of Women World Leaders (CWWL) and the Republic of Croatia. This event is a launching event with interventions of female world leaders and UN Women Executive Director.

Child Marriage in Humanitarian Setting organized by the New York Ford Foundation NoVo Foundation; And Girls Not Brides and  the Launching Event: Trailblazing Women Reception Global Launch of Target Equality.

Thursday, September 26, the Gender, Children and Social Protection Boss will attend the High-Level Event: 30 Years of Children’s Rights and the High-level Event: EU Spotlight Initiatives results and achievements, while on Friday, September 27, she will attend a Side Event: “Achieving SDG 3 and Universal Health Coverage organized by the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone and the Office of the First Lady of Sierra Leone.
