MONROVIA – Some concerned citizens of Maryland County under the banner of Maryland Justice Committee (MJC) have expressed fear for the safety of Cllr. Gloria Musu Scott, amidst what they termed as ‘massive and well-coordinated propaganda against the former Chief Justice’, called on the civil society and human rights community, the media, religious community and international partners to pay keen attention to Justice Scott’s situation and demand an independent process free from all forms of judgmental theories and propaganda.
The group, in a press release issued Thursday, April 20, 2023, said what is even more worrisome is the fact that the propaganda and judgmental statement against Cllr. Scott is coming from politicians and media institutions closed to power and authority.
The group said this constitutes a genuine reason for concern, considering that Justice Scott has been encountering strange and frightening occurrences particularly in the last two years, all of which have been duly reported to relevant state authorities.
The MJC recounted a fearful incident last year (2022) when Justice Scott’s license plate was clandestinely removed from her vehicle by unknown individuals while she was in a hearing at the National Elections Commission as lawyer for the Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence faction of the Liberty Party.
According to the group, a traffic police officer who noticed the absence of the license plate advised and insisted that she (Justice Scott) report the incident to the Inspector General of Police, Col. Patrick Sudue, which she immediately did.
Since that incident, the group intimated that Cllr. Scott had been looking on her shoulders helplessly until the first and second attacks on the 8th and 9th of February at her Virginia residence, and the third attack on February 24 which resulted in the murder of Charloe Musu.
The Maryland citizen group said sustained public indictment of Justice Scott by politicians and pro-regime media actors, points to the fact that there has since been a politically motivated and concluded conspiracy theory out of which all of the media propaganda is being hatched and spewed.
“The constant disclosure by pro-regime media institutions of an impending or planned arrest and prosecution of Justice Scott who has repeatedly alarmed about threats to her family with no genuine steps taken by state authorities until the gruesome murder of Charloe Musu, is enough proof that there is a plan by unscrupulous individuals to bring her into custody and harm her,” the group maintains
The Marylanders are therefore drawing the attention of the Liberian people and the international community to what they see as a calculated ploy by those who have secretly been pursuing Cllr. Scott to now exploit the current circumstances to subsequently achieve what they’ve been unable to achieve over the period mentioned.
They averred that their fear is historically grounded on similar chilling accounts of how politically targeted individuals were either abducted or arrested, charged, detained and reportedly harmed while in custody.
The group, among other things, recalled the graphic accounts of the late AFL Col. Andrew Dorbor and Gen. Charles Julu, who, during their trial for alleged treason in 2006, told Criminal Court ‘A’ how they were severely tortured in state custody amid reports that they were allegedly poisoned while in detention.
The two men (Dorbor and Julu) died one after the other not too long following their acquittal and release, which raised serious concerns about the manners in which they were treated in detention.
Dorbor and Julu, two kinsmen and military commanders of slain President Samuel Kanyon Doe, were picked up by operatives of the National Security Agency (NSA) from Guinea and Ivory Coast respectively, brought to Liberia and prosecuted on false treason charges in an apparent witch-hunt conspiracy.
The Maryland group of citizens also mentioned the reported injection of civil rights activist Vandalack Patricks with unknown substances in 2016 after he was arrested for leading a protest against alleged corruption and other societal ills.
Another shocking incident cited by the group is the alleged kidnap, torture and poisoning in 2019 of Jestina Taylor, the lady whose situation caused huge protests and road blocks at the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital junction and led to serious confrontation between the Liberia National Police and angry protesters.
The group also described as “strange and scaring”, the constant and subjective broadcast of every step and detail of the investigative process by pro-regime media outlets, terming it as enough grounds to also believe that the conclusion of the case was derived and designed long before the investigation began.
They were alarmed by what they called “a strange triangular scenario of the ongoing investigation” comprising the ruling CDC, the police and pro-regime media, in which no one angle contradicts the other prior to and since the beginning of the investigation.
The group term as very interesting is the fact that the police and pro-regime media institutions continue to say, do or insinuate everything leaders of the ruling party said before the investigation commenced.
This, according to them, shows that there is a purposely coordinated effort to bring out what is concocted, designed and politically anointed to be the outcome of the investigation, and not necessarily what should be the outcome.
The group cited what they consider a deliberate and malicious campaign of rumors indicating that Justice Scott has committed suicide and/or she has absconded the country, or planning to abscond as reason to alarm at the said conspiracy against the state woman.
These rumors, according to the group, could be an apparent conspiracy to prepare the minds of the public for a possible sinister plan to harm their former senator and one who, for the last three decades plus, has served her country in so many capacities, with commitment and dedication.
The Maryland Justice Committee is meanwhile calling on the civil society and human rights community, the media, religious community and international partners to pay keen attention to Justice Scott’s situation and demand an independent process free from all forms of judgmental theories and propaganda.
