Cummings Raises Hope Of Marketers -Visits Several Markets in District #2

MONROVIA: Against the backdrop of the many challenges facing Liberian businesses which have negatively affected start-ups, their growth and sustainability, the Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties(CPP), Alexander B. Cummings has raised the hope of Liberian business owners of better days ahead under his presidency where a USD20m loan scheme for Liberian entrepreneurs including market women to sustain and grow their businesses which will kick off in the first 100 days upon being sworn in as President.

Mr. Cummings gave the assurance yesterday, Tuesday, September 5, 2023, when he visited several market halls and places in District #2, Montserrado County after listening to some of them complaining about the harsh business environment they are doing business in and expressing the urgent need for relief. The nearly six-hour tour commenced at the Omega Market in Paynesville, to the Mount Barclay Community Market, then the Nimba United Community Market and finally the Johnsonville Market area where in the process marketers scramble to have a glimpse of him and shake hands with him.

Our reporter who covered the tour of the number partisan of the CPP saw jubilant Marketers leading Cummings and entourage on the guided tour where some of them pull out the thoughts to lament the unfavorable conditions they are doing their businesses including the lack of support and the deplorable and unsanitary conditions of the various market communities in District #2.

“We have come to see you and to find out from you some of the challenges you are facing so that when we are elected by God’s grace through your votes, we will have first -hand information on how to solve some of these problems. We have gone to other marketplaces and it seems that you all have similar problems raising capital to start, grow and sustain your businesses.

“Being a businessman ourselves, we have good understanding of it which is general and that is why we are saying when we are elected during our first 100 days of office we will make available USD20m for Liberian businesses that most of you will benefit from.

“We will enforce the Liberianization policy, which sets aside certain businesses exclusively for Liberians”, Cummings told some marketers at the Mount Barclay Market amid loud cheers and shout of “We Want Cummings, The Pappay will win” all over the place from the marketers..

The Omega Market is the most densely populated area with an estimated 10,000 marketers, predominantly women of the Kpelleh, Gio, Mano and Grebos ethnic groups who are mainly engaged in the sale of Agricultural produce.

The Mount Barclay Community Market, constructed by government and the Nimba United Community Market constructed by Bishop Nimely Donyen, have a huge voting population, followed by the Johnsonville market District.

The astute businessman turned politician  empathized with the marketers over the deplorable state of affairs which, he said is negatively impacting their businesses, but said, there is great hope with his election as the next President to replace the “inept leadership of President George Weah”.

He assured Liberians that the CPP Leadership will prioritize economic recovery for massive job creation, through support for a strong and vibrant private sector, controlled by Liberians.

The CPP Standard Bearer also used the tour while interacting with the marketers, street peddlers and ordinary citizens in District #2, Montserrado County six-hour encounter with marketers, street peddlers, and ordinary citizens, in District #2, Montserrado County, to distribute posters and sharing his vision for real change in Liberia and attracted hundreds of bystanders who hailed him for the new style of political campaign of person-to-person engagement.
