Cooperatives Would Salvage Joblessness -Says CDA Boss; Calls for Patience With Pres. Weah

The Registrar General for Cooperative Development Agency (CDA),Madam Regina Sokan-Teah, is urging Liberians to contribute to the national economy through establishment of cooperatives to provide job opportunities in the ccountry. The CDA boss noticed that Cooperative employment is far from a marginal phenomennon. Recently an estimate showed that cooperatives around the world are the main source of income for more than 279 million people, about 10% of the global working population.

“Through participation, members of cooperatives are encouraged to be motivated to change their lives and their communities; this is why President Weah is doing every posible to put more attention in the direction of cooperative activities in Liberia”, Madam Sokan Teah said.

She urged cooperative societies and other Liberians to be very patience with President Geoege Manneh Weah’s led government, saying “the President is doing every thing posible to improve the lives of ordinary Liberians”, adding that the issue of development is not an event but process …”

The CDA boss made the remarks during celebration of the International Day of Cooperatives, celebrated under the global theme, “Cooperatives for Decent Work”,

The programs commemorating celebration of the International Day of Cooperatives was held in the commercial City of Ganta, Nimba County where the CDA boss spoke when she gave the overview and hignligted importance of the Day, which she pointed out was also aimed at increasing awareness about the need for establishment of more cooperatives in the country.

Contributions by the cooperative movement is to be resolving the major problems addressed by the United Nations and extending the partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other actors, according to Madam Sokan-Teah.

She said the President is doing everything to his reach to improve the lives of every Liberian, especially in the Cooperative sector. She stated that cooperative helps to preserve employement and promote decent work in all sectors of the economy.

The Cooperative Development Agency is the legal, technical and administrastive, regulatory and educational arm of the government of Liberia that is responsible for all activities concerining and related to cooperative development in the country, established by an act of National Legislature in 1936.

Meanwhile, the first female  Cooperative Registrar General has disclosed some of her achievements as Registrar General at the CDA, which  include a successful ‘Nationwide Tour’. She also named tours of some Cooperatives including the Upper Jeadea Mining Cooperative in Sinoe County that has given LD$900,000 and US$1,800 for the contructions of school arm chairs and bridges, Forkpoh Mining Cooperative, and US$19,000 was given for the contruction of community school in Grand Kru County.
