MONROVIA: Tourism—that vast industry which plays a significant role in keeping the economies of modern civilizations thriving, which other nations depend on at times singularly or largely to bolster their fight against poverty, and as growth engine, stimulating investment in infrastructure, promoting sustainable development, and fostering the conservation of cultural and natural heritage—has from time immemorial been at the lowest ebb of consideration of successive Liberian political administrations. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is pursuing a more direct and bolder strategy to bring tourism in the center stage of national attention, not only etching it to his flagship development agenda called ARREST, the “T” standing for tourism, but also by appointing a special envoy to assist boost the sector. H.E. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has appointed Mr. Christopher Hayes Onanuga as Ambassador at Large for Tourism in Liberia.
Amb. Onanuga appointment in the wisdom of the Liberian leader is based on his (Christopher Onanuga) passion for the sector and how he has contributed immensely to the country’s tourism sector.
The Ambassador at Large over decades have committed himself to the hosting of events across the country, including the National Excellence Award (NEA) in order to allow young Liberians express their talents to the rest of the World.
His passion to improve tourism did not just end at hosting events but also inviting international guest to the country, which aimed at drawing their attention to its tourism sector.
Liberia, according to his experience, has a lot to explore to the outside, something according to him on a local radio and TV show can easily be achieved only by passionate, well-connected people with the expertise like him.
He said that if focus was given to the sector since, like in the case of President Boakai, the country would have amazed so much funding that could help boost the economy of the nation.
