Anxieties over Vote Counts -Amidst Huge Turn Out

MONROVIA: With the general elections being concluded already in all the centers that did not experience challenges in receiving electoral materials, there have been anxious moments amongst Liberians as regards the outcome of the process with the ballots being counted across the country amidst huge turnout at the various polling centers.

As soon as the voting ended, staff of the National Elections Commission (NEC) in the presence of the agents of political parties and candidates and observers, commenced sorting out results of the process and counting began. At some centers that had few voters turning out, some preliminary results were released and pasted on bulletins at the centers.

According to NEC which is the official authority to announce the results, it will take 15 days before the official results will be announced but preliminary results will be made public simultaneously on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, some of the preliminary announcements made public at the various centers showed a clear running battle between President George Manneh Weah and the Standard Bearer of the Unity Party, Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai. The results thus far were not in contradiction of what was expected as the two politicians were tipped to be the two contenders for the highest office in the land.

The other candidates, Alexander B. Cummings of the Collaborating Political Parties(CPP) and Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe of the Liberian People’s Party(LPP) have not fared well in the race they were projected to have caused some upsets to President Weah and Ambassador Boakai

Most of the results being released so far came from Montserrado, Bong, Nimba, Lofa, Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Bassa Counties. Those from the Southeastern part of the country are coming in pieces due to the difficult terrain to get out the results.

Meanwhile, NEC has announced that it will announce some results today at 4:30 pm and expectations are that most of the results will tally with what the electoral body will officially announce.
