MONROVIA – The Chairman of the ruling Unity Party, Rev. J. Luthur Tarpeh, has pledged the Government of Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s commitment to protecting the rights of opposition parties against the government.
Speaking at the 4th National Convention of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) in Kakata, Margibi County, Tarpeh emphasized the Unity Party’s deep-seated values of promoting democratic tenets and values in post-war Liberia.
“My presence here today as the National Chairman of the Unity Party is a clear testimony of our commitment to ensuring that democratic values thrive in Liberia,” Tarpeh stated.
He noted that the country has moved past the era of suppressing opposition voices, where leaders were intimidated, chased out of the country, or deprived of their rights.
“Those dark days are over, and never again should our nation return to such practices,” Tarpeh declared. “I can assure you, under the Unity Party-led government, your voice will be recognized, and there will be no intimidation for any opposition.”
Tarpeh emphasized the importance of promoting political harmony and tolerance, urging Liberians to prioritize the nation’s development over partisan interests.
“Despite our differences, we are all Liberians, and as political actors, we must think and plan how to make Liberia better,” he said.
He cautioned against politicizing national development and urged political actors to remain civil in their engagements.
“Wishing a sitting government to fail simply because you are not in power is not a patriotic move,” Tarpeh said, reiterating that the Joseph Nyuma Boakai administration will respect and protect the rights of all political parties.
Tarpeh extended President Boakai’s best wishes to the ANC leadership and members, led by Alexander Cummings.
