MONROVIA: What could be described as a grave tragedy has hit the Standard Bearer of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), as members of its auxiliary group called “Girls for Weah” were involved in a fatal motor accident the Gbarnga -Ganta highway.
Efforts to confirm official information about the incident with the Liberia National Police were futile as the phone of Police Spokesman Moses Carter rang endlessly without answer. However, reports trending on social media reveal that at least three members of the group died in the accident, including the driver of the vehicle.
The “Girls for Weah” group was on its way to Nimba ahead of the President’s scheduled campaign trip when the accident occurred.
According to the report, the vehicle conveying the girls from Monrovia to Ganta was hit by a speeding truck, thereby resulting in the tragic accident.
A social media user, who called himself as DJ Aaronic, confirmed that all passengers died in the accident around new Iron Gate checkpoint on the highway. This could not be independently confirmed.
Another social media user, named Aloysius Weah, said the driver had epilepsy that might have led to the untimely death of the girl while on a campaign trip to Nimba. This also is yet to be confirmed.
According to CDC sources, the Girls of Weah auxiliary was formed recently to support the second term reelection bid of the Standard Bearer of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change, Dr. George Manneh Weah.
The group has reportedly been involved with serious ground-games in favor of the CDC, mainly in favor of President Weah, mobilizing their fellow young women and other youth as to ensure that the Liberian leader gets a resounding one-round victory come October 10, 2023.
But on Tuesday the entire country was petrified with terrible news that a few ranking members of the auxiliary, while on their way to Nimba to continue their mobilization works, met their untimely demise.
The names of the victims are yet to be disclosed.
Weah Suspends Campaign Activities
Meanwhile, President George Weah has suspended his campaign tours slated for the hinterland for two days in honor of the memory of the dead persons.
The President who was already in the western parts of the country, specifically Bomi County, returned to Monrovia immediately when the news of the accident and death hit him.
In a CDC release, the President said he was saddened by the death of the three females, and has also extended condolences to the bereaved family for their loss.
He called on supporters of the party to join him today, Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the Party’s headquarters in Congo Town, to mourn their loss.
The President has also encouraged supporters of the party to join him in praying for and with the families, as they deal with this disheartening situation.
He also called on partisans to pray for the speedy recovery of other members of the group that sustained severe injuries during the accident.
It is believed in CDC circles that ‘Girls for Weah’ added a reasonable momentum to the party’s campaign process this year, something that has been adopted by several other political parties.
A party official told The Analyst that the victims dedicated their lives to advancing the ideals and values of the political movement, leaving behind a void that will be difficult to fill.
