MONROVIA – The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) turns 62 this week with a program built around one idea. Its Wednesday, September 30 celebration casts independent media as a pillar of democracy, accountability and sustainable development. The choice of speakers is telling. World Bank Group Liberia Country Manager Georgia Wallen will deliver the keynote address. Cllr. Medina Wesseh and Moroccan Chargé d’Affaires Lahoucine Rahmouni will join a panel on the theme. A development lender, a lawyer and a diplomat will address the press on its own independence. Separately, the PUL hosted BBC journalist Jacob Evans and a Mary’s Meals delegation. The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has released the official calendar of events for its 62nd anniversary celebrations, scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in Monrovia. Several distinguished personalities will address the official indoor program under the theme “62 Years On: Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development.”
Among them is Ms. Georgia Wallen, Country Manager of the World Bank Group Liberia, who will deliver the keynote motivational address. Her remarks will be followed by a panel discussion on empowering independent media to advance democracy, accountability, and sustainable development.
Panelists include Cllr. Medina Wesseh, Senior Counsel at the International Law Group, and Mr. Lahoucine Rahmouni, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco to Liberia. Complementary remarks will also be delivered by representatives of invited government institutions, civil society, and academia.
Parade and Reception
Before the indoor activities, journalists, media and communication practitioners, students of journalism and mass communication, and members of the public will stage a grand parade from the Capitol Hill Campus of the University of Liberia to the Clar Marie Weah Events Hall at the Center for National Documents and Records Agency (National Archives), 12th Street, Sinkor. Following the indoor activities, a celebratory reception will be held at the PUL Head Office, located on Warner Avenue, 9th Street, Sinkor.
BBC, Mary’s Meals Visit PUL
Ahead of the celebrations, on Monday, September 28, 2026, the PUL officially welcomed journalist Jacob Evans of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), accompanied by a delegation of the humanitarian charity Mary’s Meals International. Evans is in Liberia to produce a documentary as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of Mary’s Meals in Liberia.
The visiting delegation included Mr. Alex Keay, Director of Partnerships, and Paloma Garcia Ovejero, Head of Media and Editorial. During the visit, the PUL leadership and staff welcomed Evans and the Mary’s Meals team, emphasizing the vitally important roles of journalism and charity in advancing human development.
