MONROVIA – Liberia’s geological archives may be worth more than they look. Maps, field records, and old survey reports are the raw intelligence of mining. Whoever reads them first gains a decisive commercial edge. That is why KoBold Metals’ planned November visit matters. The company pairs artificial intelligence with geological expertise to hunt critical minerals. Its interest aligns with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s 2025 appeal to Washington for help surveying Liberia’s resources. The opportunity for Liberia is real. So is the governance question here. The Embassy’s account is silent on who will own digitized data, and on what terms. As THE ANALYST reports, experts say the Ministry of Mines and Energy must define access before modernization begins.
The Embassy of Liberia in Washington has taken another step toward strengthening international partnerships aimed at improving Liberia’s geological knowledge and unlocking the country’s mineral potential through responsible and technologically driven exploration.
His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh and senior officials of the Embassy recently held a productive meeting with Mr. Alan Carroll, Deputy Director of Government Affairs for KoBold Metals, a United States-based mineral exploration and development company that is using cutting-edge technology to transform the way critical mineral resources are discovered around the world.
The discussions focused on opportunities for collaboration between Liberia and KoBold Metals in advancing geoscientific research, modernizing geological data systems, and supporting responsible mineral exploration in the West African nation.
The meeting underscored the growing importance of reliable geological information as Liberia seeks to attract quality investment, enhance resource governance, and strengthen institutional capacity within its mining sector.
AI Meets Liberia’s Geological Records
KoBold Metals has gained international recognition for its innovative approach to mineral exploration through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), advanced data analytics, and geological expertise.
The company’s mission, described as “Finding the Materials of the Future with AI and HI,” combines artificial intelligence and human intelligence to improve the efficiency and accuracy of mineral discovery.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on how modern technologies can help Liberia better understand its geological landscape and create new opportunities for sustainable resource development.
Attention was given to the value of preserving, organizing, and digitizing historical geological records to support exploration activities and informed decision-making.
KoBold Delegation Due in November
A significant outcome of the discussions was the anticipated visit of a KoBold Metals delegation to Liberia during the week of November 2, 2026.
The proposed mission follows an invitation extended by Hon. Samuel J. Summerville, Assistant Minister for Mineral Exploration and Environmental Research at the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).
According to Minister Counselor Al-Jerome Anastas Chede Sr., the plans currently under consideration will see Carroll lead the delegation to engage with officials of the MME and the Liberia Geological Survey (LGS).
The visit will focus on reviewing the LGS’s historical reports, maps, field records, and digital archives to identify opportunities for preservation, modernization, and improved public accessibility.
The effort represents an important step toward building a stronger geoscientific foundation for Liberia’s mineral sector. Geological surveys and historical exploration records serve as valuable tools for understanding mineral potential, reducing exploration risks, and attracting responsible investments that contribute to economic growth.
Beyond data management, the KoBold Metals delegation is also expected to deepen its understanding of Liberia’s exploration environment and geological characteristics within the broader West African context.
Such engagement could provide valuable insights into regional mineral systems and help identify opportunities for future cooperation between Liberia and international exploration partners.
Boakai’s Survey Request to Trump
The discussions come at a time when Liberia is actively pursuing strategies to strengthen its minerals sector and improve the quality of information available to support exploration and investment decisions.
Accessible and reliable geoscientific data are widely recognized as essential components of successful mineral development programs, providing investors and governments with the knowledge necessary to evaluate opportunities and manage resources responsibly.
The planned engagement also carries broader significance considering President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s request to President Donald Trump during a White House meeting in July 2025 for United States assistance in surveying Liberia’s mineral resources.
That request highlighted Liberia’s commitment to building partnerships that can help improve geological knowledge, identify critical mineral potential, and promote sustainable economic development.
Embassy officials emphasized that strengthening geological institutions and expanding access to high-quality geoscientific information are important priorities for Liberia as it seeks to maximize the benefits of its natural resources while ensuring transparency and environmental stewardship.
Participating in the meeting were Ms. Joetta Addy, First Secretary for Commerce, Trade and Development, and Mr. Charles Allen, Minister Counselor for Political and Diaspora Affairs, who joined discussions on potential avenues for cooperation and investment promotion.
The Embassy of Liberia remains committed to supporting initiatives that foster innovation, strengthen institutional capacity, and attract responsible investment to Liberia.
Ambassador Conteh expressed optimism that the forthcoming visit by KoBold Metals could lay the groundwork for practical collaboration that benefits the LGS, the MME, and the country’s broader development objectives.
As preparations continue for the November mission, the Embassy looks forward to facilitating engagement between KoBold Metals and Liberian government stakeholders, with the shared goal of modernizing geological data systems, enhancing exploration capacity, and creating new opportunities for sustainable growth in Liberia’s natural resources sector.
