MONROVIA – The allegations surrounding President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s son have thrust Liberia’s anti-drug campaign into an uncomfortable intersection of politics, public trust and the rule of law. At a moment when authorities are intensifying operations against narcotics trafficking, scrutiny of individuals perceived to wield influence carries unusual national significance. Joseph N. Boakai Jr.’s response therefore extends beyond a personal defense; it is an appeal for institutional credibility and evidence-driven justice. His call for an independent investigation places responsibility squarely on Liberia’s security agencies to establish facts rather than permit speculation to shape public opinion. Challenging Authorities to Establish the Truth
After a period of silence following allegations linking his name to individuals reportedly associated with narcotics, Joseph N. Boakai Jr., son of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has strongly denied any involvement in drug trafficking and challenged Liberia’s security institutions to investigate the matter fully and impartially.
In a lengthy public statement issued Wednesday, July 29, Boakai Jr. explained that the controversy compelled him to address allegations he would ordinarily have ignored. He said he had deliberately avoided responding publicly to rumors and accusations for nearly three years because he did not want to become a distraction to his father’s administration.
With his name now publicly connected to Liberia’s increasingly sensitive narcotics debate, however, he said he believed he owed Liberians a direct explanation.
The President’s son, affectionately known as “JoJo,” described the fight against drugs as one of the most serious challenges confronting Liberia and argued that the issue should transcend political affiliation, social status and personalities.
He urged Liberia’s security institutions to remain steadfast in identifying, prosecuting and bringing to justice anyone responsible for trafficking and distributing narcotics.
“This fight is bigger than politics and it is bigger than personalities,” he declared.
Boakai Jr. also appealed to security personnel working under difficult circumstances to remain “firm and fearless” in confronting the country’s narcotics crisis.
Distancing Himself From Government
A significant portion of Boakai Jr.’s statement addressed public perceptions surrounding his status as the President’s son.
He explained that since the beginning of 2024, he had intentionally distanced himself from the day-to-day affairs of government to ensure that public officials could perform their duties without allegations that he was exercising influence merely because of his family relationship with the President.
“I have never held myself out as a government official,” he stated, adding that he neither makes government decisions nor directs government institutions.
“My relationship to the Presidency is one of family—not constitutional authority,” he added.
According to Boakai Jr., the decision to remain outside government was deliberate and intended to prevent his relationship with the President from being interpreted as a source of official authority.
He cited the Liberia Maritime Authority as an example. He said he visited the institution only once after the 2023 elections to appreciate former colleagues with whom he had worked. Since then, he said, he has deliberately stayed away to allow the institution’s leadership to perform its responsibilities independently.
Despite that decision, he maintained that his name has continued to surface in allegations involving government institutions, contracts and decisions with which he insists he has had no involvement.
He explained that he previously chose silence because responding to every allegation could distract from the work of the Government, his family, his businesses and his personal responsibilities.
Why He Broke His Silence
Boakai Jr. said the latest controversy differs from previous allegations because it concerns narcotics, a matter he considers too serious to ignore.
He pointed to the devastating effects of drug abuse on Liberian communities, particularly among young people whose ambitions, families and futures are being destroyed by addiction.
He argued that anyone who profits from such destruction commits a grave offense against Liberia.
Boakai Jr. maintained that he has consistently made his position against narcotics trafficking clear within his circle of friends.
He said he has repeatedly informed friends that if he ever became aware of anyone close to him engaging in drug trafficking or any narcotics-related criminal enterprise, he would not protect that person. Instead, he would voluntarily provide whatever information he possessed to the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) and the Liberia National Police (LNP).
“No friendship, no business opportunity, no family connection, and no personal relationship is more important than Liberia’s future,” he stated.
3 A.M. WhatsApp Message
Boakai Jr. said the immediate controversy began several days ago when he discovered that a WhatsApp message had been sent to his phone at approximately 3:00 a.m. while he was asleep.
According to his account, the message originated from a telephone number identified as being from Colombia. He said the sender accused him of involvement in narcotics trafficking and also issued threats against him.
Boakai Jr. explained that his initial reaction was to regard the message as an attempt to manufacture a false connection between him and criminal activity.
He said he responded to the sender, rejected the allegation, blocked the number, took screenshots of the exchange and shared them with both the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the National Security Agency (NSA).
According to Boakai Jr., the controversy intensified the following day when a video appeared online displaying his WhatsApp profile photograph, telephone number and the threatening message.
“They Omitted My Response”
Boakai Jr. contended that the creators of the circulating video deliberately excluded his response to the message and his rejection of the allegations.
According to him, the omission fundamentally changed the impression the video was capable of creating.
“The creators of the video chose not to include my response to the message, and they chose not to show that I rejected the allegations,” he stated.
He maintained that the public should therefore not rely solely on the circulating material to reach conclusions about his alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking.
As he examined the video more closely, Boakai Jr. said he also recognized the photograph of another individual appearing alongside his own. He identified that individual as Ibrahima Touré.
Relationship With Touré
Boakai Jr. said he immediately informed the Director General of the National Security Agency that he knew Touré and provided an explanation of the circumstances under which they met.
According to his statement, the relationship began earlier this year through Habib Sheriff, a young Liberian who had returned from the United States and was exploring legitimate business opportunities.
Boakai Jr. said Sheriff introduced him to Touré and that their discussions centered primarily on sports development and a proposed visit to the Real Madrid Foundation.
He said he made it clear from the outset that he was not a government official and therefore could not represent the Government of Liberia or make official commitments on its behalf.
For that reason, he explained, appropriate government officials were included in discussions surrounding the proposed visit.
According to Boakai Jr., the Minister of Youth and Sports and Liberia’s Ambassador to France participated in the engagement.
He further stated that three meetings subsequently took place with representatives of the Real Madrid Foundation, as well as companies involved in medical technology and telemedicine.
According to him, those companies expressed interest in exploring opportunities to support healthcare delivery in Liberia.
Following the meetings, Boakai Jr. said, participants returned to their respective destinations while he continued with his own travel.
Private Business Discussions
Boakai Jr. explained that after returning to Liberia in May, further discussions took place regarding possible private commercial ventures involving hospitality and food services.
He characterized those discussions as ordinary business conversations and stressed that none of the proposed ventures had been concluded as of the date of his statement.
He also firmly denied that Touré had ever asked him to facilitate any illegal activity or to use his family name or perceived influence to obtain favors from the Government of Liberia.
Boakai Jr. said the same was true of Habib Sheriff, insisting that neither individual requested assistance in pursuing unlawful activities or securing government influence.
Friendship And Accountability
Boakai Jr. also addressed public speculation surrounding his friendship with Mark Kuiah, whom he described as a longtime friend known across different political circles.
He said he has never been given any reason to believe Kuiah was anything other than a law-abiding citizen. At the same time, Boakai Jr. emphasized that friendship should never be interpreted as immunity from the law.
According to him, if any of his friends are found to have violated Liberian law, they should face the consequences like every other citizen.
“I will never interfere with that process,” he declared.
He stressed, however, that he would not falsely accuse anyone merely to satisfy public opinion.
Justice Must Rest On Evidence
At the center of Boakai Jr.’s defense was an appeal for evidence, due process and fairness.
“Justice requires evidence. Justice requires due process. Justice requires fairness,” he asserted.
He rejected suggestions that he should speculate about what other people may have done or known.
“I will not invent stories,” he stated. “I will not make accusations I cannot support with evidence.”
Instead, he said, he would limit his account to matters within his personal knowledge.
Boakai Jr. then delivered his strongest denial of the allegations.
He declared that he has never participated in discussions involving narcotics trafficking, never facilitated illegal drug activity, never accepted money in exchange for influence, and never used his relationship with the Presidency to shield anyone from accountability.
According to him, those statements were not carefully crafted political talking points but simply the truth as he knows it.
Welcomes Full Investigation
Boakai Jr. said he welcomes a full, impartial and thorough investigation into the allegations.
He specifically named the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), the National Security Agency (NSA), and any other competent authority as institutions with which he would fully cooperate.
“I have nothing to hide,” he declared.
He argued that the controversy should ultimately strengthen Liberia’s determination to dismantle every network responsible for bringing narcotics into the country, regardless of who might be involved.
According to Boakai Jr., that objective should unite Liberians irrespective of political affiliation or personal interests.
Challenges Anyone With Evidence
Acknowledging that his position as the President’s son naturally subjects him to heightened public scrutiny, Boakai Jr. said he accepts that responsibility.
He appealed, however, for such scrutiny to be guided by facts rather than assumptions, evidence rather than speculation, and truth rather than rumor.
He challenged anyone who believes they possess credible evidence that he has committed a crime to submit that evidence to the appropriate authorities instead of trying the matter on social media.
“If anyone believes they possess credible evidence that I have committed any crime, I urge them to present that evidence to the appropriate authorities so that it bears consequence—not to social media,” he stated.
Boakai Jr. argued that the proper place for determining guilt or innocence is within the institutions of the Republic.
“Let the institutions of our Republic determine the facts,” he added.
According to him, allowing the relevant institutions to establish the facts is essential to preserving justice, public confidence and the rule of law.
