The update was provided during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing by Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, who outlined a broad range of achievements and ongoing interventions that government officials believe are helping to strengthen service delivery, stimulate economic growth, and create new opportunities for citizens across the country.

ELECTRICITY EXPANSION TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES

Minister Piah described the project as a landmark achievement in Liberia’s energy sector and an important step toward diversifying the country’s electricity generation sources.
The solar facility has been integrated into the national grid and is expected to contribute significantly to electricity supply, support additional customer connections, enhance public lighting, and strengthen energy reliability.

DAMAGED TURBINE RESTORED TO FULL CAPACITY
In another important development, the government announced the successful restoration of the damaged turbine at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant.
According to Minister Piah, the repaired turbine has enabled the facility to return to its full generation capacity of 88 megawatts.
The turbine had reportedly remained damaged since 2021, resulting in the loss of approximately 22 megawatts of generating capacity.
Its restoration is expected to substantially improve power availability and reliability throughout the country.

Minister Piah disclosed that Liberia’s Compact Development Team has completed and submitted a Compact Note outlining the country’s development priorities.
The submission represents a critical step in the MCC selection process and identifies key constraints to economic growth, particularly those related to energy infrastructure.
Although the eventual funding amount remains uncertain, the minister noted that Liberia previously received approximately US$257 million under its first MCC Compact.
Officials believe that successful participation in a second compact could unlock substantial grant financing for strategic national development priorities.
Unlike traditional loans, MCC assistance is provided as grant funding, creating opportunities for large-scale investments without increasing public debt obligations.
“The MCC Compact represents grant funding that does not require repayment and provides significant opportunities for national development,” Minister Piah stated.
WORLD BANK APPROVES US$125 MILLION PACKAGE
The government further announced the signing of three financing agreements with the World Bank totaling US$125 million.
According to officials, the agreements will support critical investments in energy, digital infrastructure, and road development.
Of the total amount, US$57 million has been allocated to strengthen Liberia’s energy sector through expanded solar generation, improvements at Mount Coffee, and deployment of battery energy storage systems.
Another US$50 million will support the West Africa Regional Digital Integration Program, an initiative designed to expand broadband access, strengthen cybersecurity systems, improve digital governance, and encourage innovation-driven entrepreneurship.
An additional US$18 million will support the Southeastern Road Asset Management Project, which seeks to improve strategic transportation corridors linking southeastern Liberia with the rest of the country.

AGRICULTURE RECEIVES MAJOR BOOST
Agriculture featured prominently in the government’s development update.
Minister Piah announced the launch of a major twenty-year coffee development partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and GL Farm Group.
The initiative is expected to become one of the largest agricultural investments in Liberia’s recent history.
According to government projections, the project will support the development of approximately 250,000 hectares of coffee plantations, facilitate the planting of 200 million coffee trees, and generate more than 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.

On international affairs, Minister Piah provided updates regarding Liberians stranded in Colombia and South Africa.
According to the government, Liberian diplomatic missions working with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have secured immigration waivers and repatriation assistance for dozens of Liberians in Colombia.
Government records indicate that 38 Liberians have already received authorization to depart Colombia, although many continue to face financial challenges in securing travel arrangements.
The minister clarified reports circulating on social media, emphasizing that the affected individuals are not detained but are seeking assistance to facilitate their return home.
Regarding South Africa, the government reported that 263 Liberians have been documented by Liberia’s embassy and are seeking repatriation support.
Authorities are reportedly working with international organizations, including the United Nations, to address the situation.
EBOLA PREPAREDNESS STRENGTHENED
The government also highlighted ongoing public health preparedness efforts.
The National Public Health Institute of Liberia, working alongside the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has launched an Ebola Virus Disease preparedness assessment in counties bordering neighboring countries.
The exercise covers Nimba, Grand Gedeh, River Gee, and Maryland Counties and focuses on disease surveillance, emergency preparedness, cross-border coordination, and rapid response capacity.
Health authorities view preparedness measures as critical to protecting Liberia from potential disease outbreaks and maintaining gains achieved since previous public health emergencies.
LOCAL GOVERNANCE COOPERATION EXPANDS
Minister Piah also highlighted Liberia’s hosting of an international roundtable on local governance and rural development organized in partnership with the African-Asian Rural Development Organization.

INFRASTRUCTURE PROTECTION MEASURES ANNOUNCED
The Ministry of Public Works has meanwhile announced a seventy-five-day moratorium on the movement of heavy-duty vehicles exceeding twenty-five metric tons along designated road corridors during the rainy season.
The measure, effective July 31, is intended to protect vulnerable road infrastructure and reduce further deterioration along critical routes, particularly the Tapeta-Zwedru and Zwedru-Kanweaken corridors.
Officials believe the temporary restrictions will help preserve road investments while improving long-term transportation reliability.
GOVERNMENT PURSUES ACCOUNTABILITY IN RIVER GEE CASE
Minister Piah also disclosed that the Liberia National Police has formally charged and forwarded to court eight individuals connected to the alleged public humiliation and mistreatment of a woman in River Gee County.
The action followed widespread public concern after videos of the incident circulated on social media.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation focused exclusively on alleged criminal conduct and not on accusations relating to witchcraft.
The government said the case reflects its commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring accountability under the law.
