MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia has moved to calm rising public concern over tensions along the Liberia–Guinea border by emphasizing diplomacy, regional engagement, and restraint as the primary tools for resolving the situation. The developments come amid reports of cross-border confrontations that have heightened anxiety in communities near the frontier, particularly in Lofa County. With citizens closely watching the government’s handling of the matter, authorities say diplomatic channels involving regional institutions are already active to prevent further escalation. The approach reflects Liberia’s longstanding reliance on dialogue and regional cooperation to resolve disputes with neighboring states. For the Boakai administration, the challenge now lies in maintaining peace while safeguarding national sovereignty. THE ANALYST’s Lincoln Hne Dalieh reports.
The Government of Liberia has announced that diplomatic engagements are actively underway to address and peacefully resolve tensions reported along the Liberia–Guinea border.
In an official update issued Thursday from Capitol Hill, authorities reassured Liberians and residents within the country’s borders that discussions with Guinean authorities are continuing through both bilateral and multilateral channels aimed at preventing escalation and restoring calm to the affected border communities.
According to the statement, the diplomatic process currently involves regional bodies including the Mano River Union (MRU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), both of which are supporting efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the situation.
“The Government of Liberia announces and reassures Liberians and residents within our borders that diplomatic efforts are continuing to amicably resolve tensions at the Liberia–Guinea border,” the statement said.
Officials emphasized that Liberia’s approach to the situation is guided by dialogue, cooperation, and regional peacebuilding mechanisms that have historically been used to manage cross-border concerns among West African states.
As part of the next step in the diplomatic engagement, the Government disclosed that a high-level Liberian delegation will travel to the Republic of Guinea within the next twenty-four hours to continue discussions with Guinean authorities.
The mission will build on earlier dialogue already initiated at the border during a recent engagement between officials of the two countries.
“The Government of Liberia notes that a high-level delegation will be dispatched to the Republic of Guinea within the next twenty-four hours to engage in dialogue with the Guinean authorities as a continuation of the recent Guinea–Liberia dialogue held at the border with the high-level inter-ministerial delegation,” the statement explained.
Authorities say the initiative is intended to sustain diplomatic communication between the two neighboring countries and to address concerns raised by residents in border communities.
Meanwhile, the National Security Council (NSC) of Liberia, chaired by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has been holding regular meetings to monitor developments and coordinate the government’s response.
According to the statement, the Council most recently met on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, during which it briefed the leadership of both chambers of the National Legislature on the evolving situation along the border.
The briefing formed part of efforts by the executive branch to keep lawmakers informed about national security developments and ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
The Government also confirmed that joint security forces have been deployed in Foya, Lofa County, where tensions have been most pronounced, in order to maintain peace and prevent further incidents.
Authorities are urging residents in the area to cooperate with security personnel and avoid actions that could aggravate the situation.
“The Government of Liberia reiterates its call to citizens, particularly those residing in border communities, to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding,” the statement noted.
Residents were also encouraged to cooperate with members of the joint security teams deployed to maintain stability and prevent escalation.
In addition to the diplomatic engagement, the Government confirmed that it is investigating a shooting incident reported on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, which left a Liberian citizen injured.
According to the official update, the injured individual is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
“The injured citizen is in stable condition and responding to treatment,” the Government said.
Authorities further disclosed that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being jointly investigated by security personnel from both Liberia and Guinea.
Officials say the investigation aims to establish the facts surrounding the shooting and determine the sequence of events that led to the incident.
Despite the tensions, the Government reiterated its commitment to resolving the situation through peaceful means rather than confrontation.
“The Government reaffirms its commitment to resolving the current situation at the border through peaceful dialogue, diplomatic engagement, and peacebuilding,” the statement emphasized.
Authorities also cautioned members of the public against spreading misinformation or inflammatory content that could worsen tensions.
According to the Government, inaccurate reports circulating on social media and other platforms risk undermining peace efforts and creating unnecessary panic among residents.
The public was therefore urged to rely on verified information from official sources and to exercise caution when sharing unconfirmed reports about the situation.
“The Government calls on the general public to be mindful of the spread of negative and false information that could inflame the situation and undermine peace and national security,” the statement warned.
Liberia shares a long and historically significant border with the Republic of Guinea, and cross-border cooperation between the two countries has traditionally been managed through diplomatic channels and regional institutions.
Observers say the current engagement between the two governments will be closely watched by both citizens and international partners, particularly as border stability remains essential to trade, community relations, and regional security.
For now, authorities say the priority remains maintaining calm in the affected communities while diplomatic negotiations continue between Monrovia and Conakry.
The Government of Liberia reaffirmed that it remains committed to protecting national sovereignty while ensuring that the situation is resolved peacefully and responsibly through dialogue and regional cooperation.
