MONROVIA – Alternative National Congress (ANC) political leader Alexander B. Cummings has called on the Liberian government to urgently address the country’s escalating drug crisis.

Speaking on Monday, September 22, 2025, during a visit to the Destiny Recovery Center in Montserrado County, Cummings stressed the need for coordinated national action to curb drug trafficking and bolster rehabilitation efforts.

He praised the center’s staff and residents, calling their work and recovery journeys a source of national inspiration. “This program shows what Liberia can achieve with initiative,” Cummings said. “But we must go further this is a national emergency.”

Cummings urged the government to take the lead in cracking down on major drug traffickers. “Only the government can stop drugs from entering Liberia. They must target the big players profiting from the nation’s suffering,” he stated.

He also advocated for stronger border security and regional cooperation with neighbors like Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea.

“Stopping drugs isn’t just about enforcement it’s about giving people hope,” Cummings added, urging broader engagement with youth and support for grassroots recovery initiatives. He recommended that the government set minimum standards and provide funding to existing faith-based and community-run centers. “If new facilities can’t be built, support the ones already doing the work,” he said.

Cummings emphasized that his visit was driven by compassion, not politics. “I’m here as a father, grandfather, and uncle. We can’t lose a generation to drugs.”

He also encouraged those in recovery, acknowledging their determination. “It’s not easy, but you’re making a change. And that matters,” he told them.
