In the aftermath of the shocking death of two employees of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), Mr. Albert Peters and Mrs. Gifty Lama, the political leader of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) and the Alternative National Congress (ANC), is calling on the government of Liberia to speedily and impartially investigate the mysterious deaths of these LRA employees, including that of another LRA employee George Fahnboto, all of which raised concerns about the general safety and security of the Liberian people.
“We are concerned about the wave of fear and insecurity creeping in our society, given the mysterious deaths of Matthew Innis, Albert Peters, Gifty Lama, and George Fahnboto. Let us be reminded that fear and insecurity undermine the social cohesion of any society and upends the foundations for socio-economic development. We hope this government will take these incidents very seriously and hold any perpetrator, if found, to account,” Mr. Cummings stated upon speaking with the families of the deceased.
“Today, I spoke with Mrs. Beatrice Peters, wife of the late Albert Peters, who was found dead in his vehicle along with his colleague from the LRA, Mrs. Gifty Lama. Yesterday, I also spoke with the husband of Mrs. Gifty Lama, Mr. Sylvester Lama. During both phone calls, I expressed my sympathy to the bereaved spouses for their irreparable loss and encouraged them to remain strong, courageous, and resilient during this difficult period,” the opposition bloc leader averred.
Mr. Cummings further noted that it has been established that Albert and Gifty were consummate professionals who were hardworking and dedicated to their duty.
“It is my hope that their spouses and families would find comfort and hope in the biblical truth that the Good Lord has not forgotten or neglected them,” Mr. Cummings stated, further cautioning all Liberians to honor the memory of the deceased persons by respecting the privacy of their respective families and praying for their well-being.
Meanwhile, police authorities say they have begun investigation into the death of the two LRA employees.
The late Peters was an internal auditor at the LRA, while Gifty was a Research Analyst at the LRA. Their bodies were discovered in a parked vehicle belonging to Peters in front of the UBA bank up Snapper Hill Broad on Friday October 2.
Police spokesman Moses Carter disclosed at a press briefing Friday, 2 October in Monrovia that preliminary investigation established that the two deceased victims are employees of the Liberia Revenue Authority. Mrs. Peters, wife of the deceased male, said when she last spoke with her husband, he told her he was going to meet someone around the UBA.
She told colleagues that when her husband did not return home Thursday night she placed calls to most of their family acquaintances and all denied having knowledge of his whereabouts.
She said on Friday she had decided to search where her husband last said he would have been and upon discovering the vehicle there, she opened the door, only to discover the lifeless body of her husband and a lady.
Relatedly, the Government of Liberia has ordered a full scale investigation into the deaths of the two LRA employees.
According to a government press release, the Ministry of Justice has ordered that autopsies be performed on the remains of Albert Peters and Gifty Lamas.
The decision followed a meeting on Tuesday, at the Ministry of Justice, with the families of the deceased to update them on the state of the investigation. The Minister of Justice and Attorney General Frank Musa Dean directed that representatives of the families be allowed at every stage of the autopsy exercise.
The families, according to Minister Dean, are also allowed to bring in pathologists of their choosing to participate in the examination or conduct an independent examination, as the government emphasizes its determination to conduct an open and impartial investigation in order to get to the cause of the unexplained deaths.
