Release Results In Timely Manner -LCC Urges NEC; Condemns Violent Incidences

Calling on National Elections Commission (NEC) to work expeditiously in releasing the results in a timely manner to avoid an increase in the ongoing tension and misinformation, the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has in the strongest term called on the electorates, opposition parties and the ruling party to remain calm and peaceful, as we await the final announcement of the results of the just ended by elections by the national elections commission.

In a press statement signed by Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, first vice president & acting president of the Liberian Council of Churches, the religious institution comprising mainstream churches in the country condemned in the strongest manner, all violent incents including the post-elections violence on Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

The LCC further denounces all inflammatory remarks made against political actors in these Elections and said it believes that these actions have the propensity to undermine the peace and security of the State

In the statement issued August 2, 2019, the LCC’s Executive Committee said it held a meeting on August 1, 2019, at which time vital matters relating to the Church, State and Society, were discussed, resulting in the need for this Press Release.

The Council acknowledged the grace of God upon this Nation and its People in spite of all the challenges being face as a nation, saying that the LCC hereby expresses thanks and gratitude to its Elections Observation Team for ably monitoring the July 29, 2019 Senatorial and Representative By-Elections in Montserrado County.

“The LCC further expresses thanks and appreciation to the Electorates of Montserrado County for turning out on July 29, 2019 to carry out their Constitutional Rights by voting for the candidates of their choice, the statement said, noting, “The Council commends the National Elections Commission (NEC) for organizing and conducting the Montserrado Senatorial & Representative By-Election on July 29, 2019 in compliance with the Laws of Liberia.”

“We call on all parties, in the strongest terms, including the Electorates, Opposition Parties and the Ruling Party to remain calm and peaceful, as we await the final announcement of the results of the just ended By-Election by the National Elections Commission,” the LCC pointed out.

The religious council wants the National Election to work expeditiously in releasing the results in a timely manner to avoid an increase in the ongoing tension and misinformation.

“In the strongest possible manner, the LCC condemns all violence, including the post-elections violence on Wednesday, July 31, 2019. The LCC further denounces all inflammatory remarks made against political actors in these Elections. The LCC believes that these actions have the propensity to undermine the peace and security of the State,“ the LCC said.

The Liberia Council of further called on all political actors to immediately refrain from these negative behaviors that do not augur well for our young democracy, reminding all citizens and residents that the Council has worked over the years to ensure that peace prevails in Liberia.

LCC indicated that it has continued to pray and work untiringly to sustain and consolidate same.  It reiterates its call on all citizens and residents of Liberia, near and far, to remain peaceful and work toward sustaining the hard earned peace that we now enjoy, and work towards the development and advancement of Liberia.

“Blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5: 9). We pray and call on us all to be peace makers,” the LCC said.
