Liberia’s holiday week weekend was particularly exciting for Ms. Hawa Samukai of the Caldwell community due to a call she received Orange Liberia that she was the winner of a brand-new Ford Figo as part of the ongoing Orange Liberia “Right on the dot” promotion. The promotion was launched in February by Orange Liberia’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Mamadou Coulibaly to give away a new car to a different winner every month for the duration of the promotion. Mr. Coulibaly had explained during the launch that the new promotion was created to encourage and reward customers who are using the company’s voice and data services at certain points during the day as a way of demonstrating the full strength and capacity of the networks ability to handle unprecedented loads with improved quality.
Media Relations Manager for Orange Liberia Madam Noosevett Weah placed the call to the lucky winner during a major press conference held before a live audience at the company’s Capital Bypass Headquarters. Weah explained that as always, the call was being made in the presence of a pool of Liberia journalists and customers to ensure transparency. “There has been a huge increase in scam call to customers asking for money in exchange for prizes and so we keep telling our customers that authentic calls from Orange are always broadcasted live on radio stations, and we never ask for money or scratch cards to claim the prize.”
The fear of being scammed was apparent even when Ms. Samukai received the call that she had won a vehicle from Orange. “I did not want to get excited because I thought it was a joke or a scam,” said Samukai, “it was only when I turned on the radio and I heard myself on air that I started to believe that this could be true.”
Immediately after placing the call, a convoy of Orange Liberia employees joined by several journalists traveled to Caldwell to deliver the vehicle to Ms. Samukai. Hundreds of her neighbors and friends came out to celebrate her win. “This is the happiest day of my life,” explained Ms. Samukai, “I woke up this morning worrying about how I would get money for transportation and now I have a brand-new car!”
Besides the opportunity to win a car monthly, the new promotion gives participating customers daily bonus credits for voice and data. Ms. Weah says Orange still has two cars to give away as part of the promotion. Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Mr. Noel Chateau highlighted that the new promotion was being called the “Right on the dot” promotion. He explained that to participate and win prizes, Orange Liberia’s customers simply needed to make a call or activate a data session sharp at round hour, at any of the 24 hours of the day. Customers who made a successful call at the top of the hour that is answered by another customer would automatically receive a bonus of $2 credit to be used the next day. The credits would be divided between both the caller and the receiver, each of them receiving $1. He explained that like the call credit bonus, subscribers who entered a 4G data session on the dot of an hour would receive 100 MB, with 50MB for themselves and 50MB to share with another subscriber of their choice. Subscribers on 3G data services would receive 50 MB, with 25 MB for themselves and 25 MB to share with another subscriber of their choice, if they started browsing at the exactly at the top of the hour.
Mr. Chateau elaborated that the vehicle grand prize would simply go to the customer with the highest number of calls placed at the top of the hour, or the highest number of data sessions started at the top of the hour. “Each time you hit the target of calling or entering a data session at the top of the hour, you receive one point,” explained Mr. Chateau, “at the end of the promotion period the individual who has received the most points drives away with the brand new vehicle. We will give away various models of different brands as the promotion is set to last several months.”
